I’m marching for my dad and for a brighter future for people living with neuroendocrine cancer
This March, I’m running to raise funds for NeuroEndocrine Cancer Australia (NECA) and all Australians living with neuroendocrine cancer, Australia’s 7th most diagnosed cancer.
Most importantly to me, I'm running for my dad, John.
He was first diagnosed with Neuroendocrine cancer 11 years ago, although he may have been living with it for much longer than that.
My dad is one of the best people I know and it's difficult to summarise him in only a few sentences. Just know that myself, my three other siblings (Alex, Maddy and James) and my mum (Kathy) are so incredibly lucky to still have Dad in our lives today.
More about the foundation itself:
NECA is the only Australian not-for-profit medical charity dedicated to neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). Their commitment to assisting patients, raising awareness, advocating for new treatments, and supporting Australian research is crucial.
Even the smallest of donations or simply passing on this message to a few friends can help this foundation in their quest to help those impacted by neuroendocrine cancer.
Thank you to everyone who is also fundraising, thank you to NECA and all those that make this foundation possible, and thank you to everyone who has donated or even just read more about this cause.
We love you Dad.

My Updates
The Current Treatment Plan
Tuesday 19th MarMy dad’s treatment plan has undergone numerous changes over the years, ranging from surgeries to drug trials and finally settling on lanreotide injections. Neuroendocrine cancer, once rare, has gained more attention recently, but long-term research remains limited compared to more prevalent cancers.
Throughout his 11-year journey, my dad’s medical team has been exceptional. They've consistently sought the best treatment options while minimizing stress on his mind and body. Last year, when his tumours spread and grew, his oncologist referred him to a specialized Neuroendocrine doctor at the Peter MacCallum Center in Melbourne, where they discussed various options.
After extensive evaluations, the team adjusted the frequency of lanreotide injections, but seeing limited effectiveness and enduring side effects, they transitioned to Everolimus. This immunosuppressant tablet, although challenging with common side effects like taste changes and lethargy, has shown promise in treating Neuroendocrine tumours.
Despite its challenges, Everolimus has helped stabilize my dad's condition, as recent scans revealed no further tumour progression. We are immensely grateful for the ongoing research, dedicated staff, excellent facilities, and supportive foundations that have made his continued treatment possible. In the face of uncertainty, we find comfort in the options available and the hope they bring.
ShareDad's Cancer Journey
Monday 4th MarOver a decade ago, my dad received a life-altering diagnosis: a neuroendocrine carcinoid tumour in his bowel. This diagnosis followed a series of exhaustive tests and procedures aimed at deciphering some perplexing symptoms. Following the removal of the tumour, he encountered post-operative complications, but eventually, after a few months, he appeared to be free from the tumour and on the path to recovery.
However, his journey took another unforeseen turn two years later when we received the distressing news that the cancer had returned, this time in his liver. Despite the challenges, my father underwent surgery to remove the affected right lobe of his liver, with doctors meticulously 'cherry-picking' the remaining left side. Once again, he seemed to be on the path to remission.
But cancer is relentless. A couple of years ago, additional small tumours were discovered in his liver, along with traces in his spine and a lymph node. Throughout this arduous journey, there have been countless hospital stays, emergency visits, and an endless array of scans and procedures.
Yet, amidst the turmoil, my dad remains steadfast in his battle, determined to embrace life to its fullest. Despite the pain and uncertainty, he finds solace in his passions - traveling, golfing, and cherishing moments with his family and friends.
As my dad continues to navigate the challenges posed by neuroendocrine cancer, I am inspired by his resilience and unwavering spirit. In honour of his courage and in support of all those affected by this relentless disease, I am taking part in the March for Nets through the Neuroendocrine Cancer Foundation. Together, let's rally behind those battling this condition and strive for a future with more research and knowledge surrounding this disease.
