7 half marathons in 7 days. Let’s go!

Starting Saturday the 22 March I’m running 7 marathons in 7 days to raise funds for NeuroEndocrine Cancer Australia (NECA) and all Australians living with neuroendocrine cancer like my mum, Sandi Smyth.

NECA is the only Australian not-for-profit medical charity dedicated to neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). Their commitment to assisting patients, raising awareness, advocating for new treatments, and supporting Australian research is crucial.

This March I’m joining forces with other Australians to support the 29,350+ people living with NETs in our country.

Together, we can make a real impact on the lives of NET patients and work towards a brighter future.

Support my fundraiser for NeuroEndocrine Cancer Australia today as I March4NETs!

Number 5 and 6 half marathons done

Thursday 27th Mar
Hey all, been a bit slack getting to this blog.  Here we go, number 5 was rough! Hard to get the motivation to get out the door and everything was pretty sore, but I can see the finish line now.  Wasn't pretty but I got it done.
Number 6, the support has been amazing, the donations, the messages and phone calls of support have been so needed. To know that there is a community behind you really helps in those dark times.
My partners sister and husband, Kate and Jas, both got up at 5 am and walked for as long as I ran - they did 11 km!! How good is that.
Julie, who I work with, got up super early and rode beside me and handed me water, put up with my silly conversations and generally got me through number 6.
What can I say other than I couldn't do this without all the support so thank you.  One more left, let's fucking go!!

Halfway!

Tuesday 25th Mar
4 down today, it was tough! I’m pretty fatigued and sore and to be honest the idea of running another 21 km was hard to take.
Not that running is anything like cancer treatment but I reckon that is how my mum feels. Tired, sore and not really wanting to go another round. But she does, the strength she shows helped motivate me through this one.
Thanks again to all my awesome donors! I can’t thank you enough, such generosity it means the world to me and mum. Okay, time to get some sleep then rinse and repeat. Number 5, lets get it

3 down

Monday 24th Mar
This was going to be a test. First time getting a half in before work.  Alarm set for 4am, didn’t like that going off. Swung the legs out of bed, time to get going. Coffee and banana then out the door.
Dark, really dark that early, pretty much just me and a few other foolhardy people getting their early exercise done.
No support this morning, way too early for that! The run was hard as the legs are feeling pretty cooked! But I got it done, quick swim, work gear on then straight to the cafe - best part of the morning!
Struggled through the day, felt super fatigued and it was awesome when it was 4 and time to go home.
Gear is sorted for the morning, feet taped up and getting my head sorted for number 4. I’ll be over half way! Let’s get it

2 down

Sunday 23rd Mar
The alarm went off at 5, not happy, didn't sleep so well.  Body feels sore already, little apprehensive about today.
At 5:30 my brother, Jake, rings like he said he would.  He got up same time as me to run a half as well.  It was the motivation I needed, he told me that I could do it, it's always amazing the feeling when other people believe that you can do something - even when you're doubting yourself!!
Headed off and the run was actually feeling okay, Emma followed me around at different spots yelling encouragement and handing me ice cold redbull - love this woman!! At around 17 km a car slowed down, pretty sure I was going to get yelled at.  It was Kate and Jason, Emma's sister and brother in law, they'd gotten up early to come support me as well. I was so stoked to have the company. even for a short period of time.
Run got done! 2 down 5 more to go, I'm feeling sore, bit worried about some blisters on my feet but I'm just going to keep at it.
I'm so thankful to the generous people that have donated their hard earned money to this cause, I'm just astounded by the amount you have all given.  Thanks you from the bottom of my heart, I know it means a lot to my mum as well.
Now I'm turning my mind towards the rest of the week, managing running and work means getting up earlier and then pretty much not paying attention for the rest of the day.
Thanks again - Let's go!

1 down 6 to go

Saturday 22nd Mar
Got up this morning at 5:00, after a pretty ordinary sleep.  To be honest, super nervous! Got my gear on and headed out the door.
The first 15 km were okay, then the wheels decided to fall off - this is going to be tougher than I thought.
I got a Redbull from my girlfriend at 17 km, it didn't give me wings but helped me get through the next couple of kms.
1st one is in the bag, and I'd be lying if I said i wasn't a bit worried about the week ahead.  The old legs are a bit tender, but I'm going to get this thing done!
Thanks to all the people that sent me messages of support last night and also to the people that are continuing to support the fundraising  page.  I'm so stoked and so is Sandi (my mum).
Let's go!!

The day before

Friday 21st Mar
So, it's the Friday before I start running 7 half marathons and I have to be honest i'm pretty nervous and anxious about whether I can finish what I have set out to do.
Then I got thinking I'm confident that is how mum feels everyday that she lives with this cancer, can she do the treatment, is the pain going to stop her doing the things she wants to do - can she do another day!
I'm going to take that strength that I see my mum express everyday and use it to try and achieve this goal.  When things get hard I'll think of mum and how much strength and poise she shows.
I just want to say a big thank you to all the people that have jumped on this page and donated to Neuroendocrine cancer Australia.  It means so much to me and mum, and I think it is a testament to how generous our fellow Aussies are.  Thanks again.  I'll try and update this over the next 7 days and include some photos of where I'm running.  Thanks for coming along on this journey - it should be interesting!
